Finger placement when fretting notes on the guitar.

Your finger tips should be up close to the fret wire nearest your picking hand (but not touching it or sat on top of it) when fretting a note on the guitar. That way with the minimum amount of pressure on the string you will get a buzz free clean sounding note.

Keep you finger nails on your fretting hand short so your fingers can come down onto the fretboard at the correct angle, this helps avoid your fingers touching other strings when making chords etc.

Try to keep this in mind when learning guitar and make a conscious effort to check you are doing it correctly that way you will build good guitar technique as you progress.

I have been learning guitar a couple of weeks and my fingers really hurt, is that normal?

When you start guitar it can be a little uncomfortable to fret the strings. Keep your fingers close to the fret to reduce the amount of pressure needed to fret the note. Make sure your guitar is set up well as a poor set will make fretting the notes harder. If it’s really hurting stop but try to practise everyday and soon your fingers will be feeling fine. Don’t give up, keep at it.
